Marcel Tröger, Violeta Burckhardt / studio erde, Berlin-ZurichCultivating Care – Polyphonic Landscapes for the Anthropocene

About the Lecture
In their lecture, studio erde will offer insight into their method of working with more-than-human relationships, material–ecological processes, and alternative atmospheres. At the centre of this approach lies an expanded understanding of care, not as maintenance alone, but as a design ethos grounded in responsibility, attention, and ongoing involvement with the life of landscapes. For studio erde, care means listening, interweaving, repairing, and cultivating spaces that are ecologically resilient, socially accessible, and collectively maintainable. The talk will explore how care can become a central tool for contemporary, responsible landscape architecture: a practice of responding to the relational, vulnerable, and productive fabric of landscapes and imagining forms of coexistence suited to the challenges of the Anthropocene.

About the Speaker
Marcel Tröger is a landscape architect and urban designer (TU Berlin, ENSP Versailles). His work has been distinguished in numerous international competitions, including the LILA Award for Young Professionals (2022), the Schinkel Prize, the Lenné Prize, and Europan 16. Before founding studio erde, he worked with internationally acclaimed practices such as Vogt Landscape and as project leader at bgmr Landscape Architects, contributing to multidimensional strategies and urban landscape projects. He has taught design studios at TU Berlin and BTU Cottbus, and participated as guest critic and jury member at various institutions. Marcel recently joined HafenCity University Hamburg as lecturer and researcher, where he is pursuing a PhD on “Principles for a Baukunst of the Anthropocene.”
About the Office
studio erde – office for anthropocene landscapes is a critical and collaborative landscape architecture practice based in Berlin and Zurich. The office stands for a responsible design practice in the Anthropocene, shaped by a planetary yet distinctly earth-bound approach. At the core of its work lies an engagement with the complexity of urbanised landscapes and territories, and with the question of how spatial design can respond to their intertwined socio-ecological, and material processes. studio erde operates at the intersection of landscape architecture, ecology, art, and urban design, understanding landscapes as polyphonic, multidimensional structures: as overlapping layers of time, material, and atmosphere shaped through the interaction of human and non-human actors. Each design task begins with decoding these material cycles and socio-ecological systems, developing landscapes that do not smooth over the specific conditions of a place, but rather reveal all its contradictions, material processes and networks of life – as wonderfully idiosyncratic and polyphonic atmospheres in the spirit of „Baukunst for and in the Anthropocene“.
The studio's spectrum ranges from territorial strategies and speculative design narratives to object planning and artistic installations. At all scales, studio erde works collaboratively and networks with different disciplines, actors and institutions – convinced that the challenges of our time can only be addressed through joint spatial practice.
